    Ohio Geography Bee Buzzes into Campus

    Ohio Geography BeeA long day of competition at OSU Mansfield for the 2008 Ohio Geography Bee contestants ended with 8 th grader Johnathan Meckler of Hawkins Middle School, located in Lyndhurst, Ohio, being named the champion.

    Second place went to Spencer Seballos of Shaker Middle School in Shaker Heights, Ohio, and third place to Clayton Hamre of Sycamore Junior High School in Cincinnati.

    “We’re happy to host the annual visit by this fine organization,” said Dr. Evelyn Freeman, OSU-M Dean and Director. “It’s a great academic program and we have made an institutional commitment to work with them for many years to come.”

    Grimm Tabbed for University-Wide Distinguished Staff Award

    Laura GrimmDuring a surprise visit by the university selection committee, including OSU President Gordon Gee, staff member Laura Grimm was named a recipient of the University’s 2008 Distinguished Staff Award. She joins eleven other staff members across the university system in receiving this year’s award.

    Grimm was cited by colleagues for her “contagious enthusiasm for OSU and high regard for everyone she serves.” She joined the OSU Mansfield campus in 1984.

    Former OSU-M Student Named Mansfield Teacher of the Year

    Dawn Williams, a second grade teacher at Woodland Elementary, was recently named Mansfield City Schools Teacher of the Year in a ceremony at the Renaissance Theatre. Williams completed her bachelor of science in education at The Ohio State University at Mansfield in 1991.

    Chosen from a group of four nominees, Williams said, “I’m overwhelmed,” as festivities unfolded around her. “I’m really representing many wonderful teachers at Mansfield City Schools.”

    Williams indicated she didn’t consider becoming a teacher until high school. She is now in her 17 th year in the district.
