Course Objectives: Critical reading/writing skills; analytical thinking in a literature context.
Course Content: The Hero Quest: The Archetypal Hero in Literature and Film. Students apply Joseph Campbell's model of the Monomyth to film and fiction, and also examine other hero models. Reading selections include "The Things They Carried" (O'Brien); "Gilgamesh"; "Antigone"; "Voyage of the Hero" (Leeming); short stories and film selections.
Method of Presentation: Textbook and selected reading assignments; written responses to reading; class discussion
Method of Evaluation: Short written responses; one film analysis and one final project.
