Course Objectives: This course provides students with a survey of physical or biological anthropology, one of the four major sub-fields of anthropology. Physical anthropology provides a unique approach to the study of human biology through its bio-cultural and evolutionary perspective.

Course Content: We will cover the fossil evidence for human origins and evolution (including introductory genetics); human biological diversity; evolution and behavior of our closest living relatives, the non-human primates (Prosimians, monkeys and apes); some morphological & physiological adaptations of primates (including humans).

Method of Presentation: PowerPoint lectures with slides, films, group discussions and projects. I anticipate that readings will be available online and that the textbook will be: Essentials of Physical Anthropology by Jurmain, Nelson, Kilgore, and Trevathan (Wadsworth Publishing).

Method of Evaluation: You will be evaluated using a combination of exams (multiple choice & short answer), informal reading summaries, a few take-home projects, attendance, and participation in group discussions and activities.
