Course Objectives: To acquaint students with Africa's diverse geography, people, and culture; to provide students with broad and useful knowledge about Africa's historical past; to examine the interrelationships between Africa, Europe, and the Americas during the trans-Atlantic Slave Trade; to introduce students to important historical and contemporary issues such as the slave trade and slavery, ethnicity, race, class, gender, education and politics
Course Content: Required textbooks: Northrup, David (ed) The Atlantic Slave Trade, 2nd ed (Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 2002); Poggo, Scopas, Reader: Introduction to African-American and African studies, 101 (Zip Publishing Co., 2005); Stout, Neil R., Getting the most out of your US history: The history student's vade mecum (Lexington, MA: D.C. Heath and Co., 1993).
Method of Presentation: This course is primarily based on lectures, discussions, and films. Weekly readings will be provided, and it is important that students must read the materials before the lectures. Students will be expected to attend classes regularly in order to keep up with the course. Students are encouraged to participate effectively in discussion sessions.
Method of Evaluation: There will be three impromptu quizzes; a term paper; mid-term exam, final exam and class attendance and discussion.
