Course Objectives: This course is an introductory survey to African History from the beginning of the mass peopling of the continent (roughly the year 700 AD) to 1870. This is the period often referred to as precolonial Africa. The purpose of the course is to introduce the students to the principal themes and developments in the historical evolution of the African continent. We will discuss the role of ethnicity, religion, and trade in the formation of precolonial societies and states in Africa, and then examine the ways in which these systems were affected by the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
