Course Objectives: In our survey of major movements in American literature, from the end of the American Civil War to the present, we will cover both popular writing and more 'literary' texts, in order to give you a sense of the range of American writings throughout the period. However, particular emphasis will be placed upon the literary quality of the writings and upon the cultural perspectives that the writings possess. In addition, there will be extensive discussions on each text, in order to help you focus on making connections between each text and its context(s). We are using an anthology because it necessarily includes a broad range of literary voices -- in addition to the 'great works' that come readily to mind. Indeed, some of the authors and readings we will discuss will already be familiar to you; many, however, will not.

Course Content: The course will cover some of the best American poetry and fiction written from the end of the American Civil War to the present. Among the writers studied will be Twain, Chopin, Frost, Eliot, Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, Ellison, Tyler, and Wilbur.

Method of Presentation: The course will consist of lecture and discussion, with as much of the latter as possible.

Method of Evaluation: A reading response (and its revision), and a midterm and final exam. Participation will also constitute a significant part of the grade.
