Course Objectives: We'll work toward several goals: learning how writers develop and how to assist them in that learning process in a peer/collaborative setting; developing a nuanced understanding of writing processes; gaining familiarity with writing conventions, genre expectations, and the resources for finding answers to questions about grammar, punctuation, etc.; and becoming comfortable working with a variety of writers in peer-consulting contexts.

Course Content: We'll read about writing center theory and practice and about collaborative conferencing as a strategy for improving writing. The course content will also draw on students' observations of and experiences with peer-consulting sessions. Students will be assigned to spend some out-of-class time tutoring writers in a first-year writing course at Mansfield.

Method of Presentation: Reading, discussion, collaborative work, and observation of and participation in peer consultations about writing.

Method of Evaluation: Students will be evaluated based on their thoughtful responses to assigned readings, a few short essays in which they reflect on what they observed or experienced in a peer-consulting session, a few informal in-class presentations, and a final exam.
