Course Objectives: -To examine the role and status of Black women from a historical perspective. -To explore the effects of social, historical, economic, political and gender conditions on the Black female and her family. -To identify social policies which have had damaging effects on the lives of Black women. -To identify and explore cultural images and perceptions of Black women. -To help students develop a knowledge base about contemporary realities facing Black women in America by understanding historical ties. -To help students think critically about the relationship between race, gender and class. -To help students understand the social reality of systems of oprression and how they impact the lives of Black women. -To identify Black women who have participated in the liberation struggle.

Course Content: This course will explore the history and status of Black women from slavery to the present.

Method of Presentation: Interactive lecture, class discussions, student presentations, films, film clips.

Method of Evaluation: Three exams, Research paper (4-6 pages), In-Class presentation.
