Course Objectives: The main goal of the course is to improve instructional practices of prospective and practicing teachers of Earth Sciences at the pre-college level.
Course Content: Using the overarching theme Earth as a dynamic system, we will discuss 17 essential Earth System Science concepts, based on the National Science Education Standards (NRC, 1996) and the Benchmarks for Science Literacy (AAAS, 1993). These 17 ideas are organized in 5 groups: (1) The Earth as a System, (2) The Geosphere, (3) The Atmosphere, (4) The Hydrosphere, and (5) The Biosphere.
Method of Presentation: A mixture of lectures, seminar presentations, and hands-on activities (exploration and visualization) will be used. Students will use innovative teaching resources and supplemental materials (including real environmental datasets) to explore the Earth System, and develop content that can be used in their classroom.
Method of Evaluation: Since this is a week-long workshop, the grade will be based upon participation of the student in classroom activities.
