Course Objectives: To introduce the basic concepts of organic and biological chemistry.
Course Content: Key concepts covered include saturated and unsaturated hydrocarbons, alcohols, ethers, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amine, stereoisomerism, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.
Method of Presentation: The course meets 2 evenings per week for 3.5 hours. The first evening will include a 1 hour lecture followed by a 2.5 hour lab. The second evening consists of approximately a 1 hour question/answer period or an exam followed by coverage of new material via lectures and in-class problem solving.
Method of Evaluation: Course grades will be based on 600 points originating from homework (45 pts), 7 lab reports (105 pts), 3 exams (300 pts), and a comprehensive final (150 pts).
