The Riedl family spent six and a half years in Germany after the Second World War, where John Riedl Sr. participating in the Military Government and the rebuilding of Germany. Returning to Milwaukee, John graduated from Marquette University High School and Marquette University. After earning a Ph.D. fron the University of Notre Dame he spent two years in the U.S.Army as a 1st Lieutenant. He won appointment at OSU 1n January of 1966 as Assistant Professor of Mathematics and was promoted to Associate Professor in due course. He served the College of Mathematical and Physical Sciences as Asst. Dean, Assoc. Dean and, for two years, as acting Dean. In 1988 he was appointed Dean and Director of The Ohio State University at Mansfield, a position he held for 16 years until his retirement. During most of his career he taught undergraduate mathematics courses concurrent with his administrative duties and he continues to teach on post-retirement contracts. In 2007 he accepted appointment as Interim President of the MedCentral College of Nursing, a position he held for one year. He has been active in the Mansfield community, with service to St. Peter's Schools, the Rehab, Rotary, University College & University Access Network (U-CAN), and Mansfield Memorial Homes.
